DETROIT – Christian Braun, a national champion last season at Kansas, loves playing in March. The Nuggets’ rookie has swung in and out of the rotation like a yo-yo, but he was there Thursday night, when Denver badly needed to seize momentum and, later, a win. The Nuggets snapped their season-long four-game losing streak, knocking off the Pistons, 119-100.It wasn’t until the fourth quarter, when a bench unit featuring Braun and Jamal Murray, wrested control of the game. Braun made a couple baskets off looks from Murray, setting the table for Nikola Jokic to return to action and dominate. Once Jokic exited the game with 30 points, 10 rebounds and nine assists, he was greeted by a hearty cheer from the away crowd, which was dotted with Serbian flags.Murray ended the game with 19 points, and Braun tallied nine points and two steals. Published Sat, 22 Feb 2025 18:39:13 GMT

Austin Gomber is a starting pitcher again and he plans to make the most of his regained role. The Rockies’ left-hander, the centerpiece of the Nolan Arenado trade with St. Louis before the 2021 season, was relegated to the bullpen last year in part because of his ineffectiveness as a starter. Colorado manager Bud Black also wanted a lefty reliever when Lucas Gilbreath was injured.“He thinks he’s a starter and I don’t disagree with him at all,” Black told reporters Thursday morning at Salt River Fields in Scottsdale, Ariz.Thursday afternoon, in Colorado’s 7-1 loss to the Padres, Gomber surrendered two earned runs on seven hits over four innings while striking out two and walking one. That’s not a great line, but both Black and Gomber said that Gomber’s stuff was good. Gomber was pleased with how he threw his curveball, a pitch that’s been a little off-kilter this spring as he tweaks his delivery.“I felt like the breaking ball really came ...

Mack Rhoades rolled into Ball Arena waving an olive branch in one hand and an invitation in the other.Ya know, CU Buffs, if this whole Pac-12 TV deal doesn’t stick the landing … call me.“I’ll say what I’ve said before: I don’t think anybody’s rooting for the demise of the Pac-12,” the Baylor athletic director told me with a grin as we chatted outside the Bears’ locker room, where his team is preparing for its NCAA Tournament matchup with 14th-seeded UC Santa Barbara here Friday. “And certainly, our commissioner’s not.”Wait. We’re talking about Brett Yormark, right?THAT Brett Yormark?Coulda fooled me.“I think we’re all rooting that they end up with a media deal that’s really good for the 10 of them,” Rhoades continued, switching from peace mode to hypothetical invitation mode. “But, you know, if it comes to a point in time where that media deal is not in their best interest, then why wouldn’t we be interested in a school, in an institution, like CU?”He smiled.Oh, Bi...
