AUSTIN (KXAN) -- Several months after hundreds of volunteers canvassed Austin overnight, looking for people sleeping outside, the Point-In-Time (PIT) count data is expected to be released this spring. But the Ending Community Homeless Coalition (ECHO) said the in-person count is not the most accurate depiction of how many people are sleeping outside and the numbers are likely to be an undercount. "There are some requirements that HUD have that make it to where you're not really actually counting everyone experiencing homeless because, for example, you have to actually see them, so if you see a tent and you think that somebody is in there you couldn't count them," said Akram Al-Turk, director of research and evaluation at ECHO. Count of Austin’s homeless population will be taken for first time since 2020 During the pandemic, the PIT count was put on hold due to health and safety reasons. During that time, ECHO put together a way to collect data from local outreach groups to estimat...Schubert Club highlights world premiere by Barcelona-born composer Marc Migó

Violinist David Brubaker and pianist Miryana Moteva on Thursday performed the world premiere of “Death and Spring,” by Barcelona-born composer Marc Migó, a work the two musicians commissioned and was also dedicated to them. It was part of the Schubert Club’s free “Courtroom Concert Series” at St. Paul’s Landmark Center, a fantastic program that often features the talents of Twin Cities musicians.Brubaker had previously encountered Migó when the Minnesota Orchestra, where Brubaker is a first violinist, commissioned a work by him as part of the Minnesota Orchestra Composer Institute in 2020. He said that after he and Moteva received the music for “Death and Spring” a month before the Courtroom Concert, they were part of a process to make changes to it.“There were some things in here that I didn’t feel were playable,” Brubaker admitted. That’s the beauty of working with a living composer — both of the musicians got to be part of a brand new piece come to life — even as the final ...Thefts prompt Minnesota, 16 states to urge recall of Kia, Hyundai cars

Attorneys general in Minnesota and 16 states on Thursday urged the federal government to recall millions of Kia and Hyundai cars because they are too easy to steal, a response to a sharp increase in thefts fueled by a viral social media challenge. Some Kia and Hyundai cars sold in the United States over the last decade do not have engine immobilizers, a standard feature on most cars that prevents the engine from starting unless the key is present.Videos circulating on the social media service TikTok have shown how people can start Kia and Hyundai models by using only a screwdriver and a USB cable. In Los Angeles, thefts of Hyundai and Kia cars increased by about 85% in 2022, now accounting for 20% of all car thefts in the city, according to the California attorney general’s office. These social media-inspired thefts have often ended in tragedy, with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration blaming the stolen car trend for 14 reported crashes and eight deaths. Take a bow Ryan Feltner, you are officially a slump buster. The Rockies’ right-hander pitched a gem Thursday night and got an early boost from C.J. Cron in the Rockies’ 5-0 victory over the Phillies at Citizens Bank Park. The victory snapped Colorado’s eight-game losing skid, its longest losing streak since dropping nine straight from Aug. 27-Sept. 4, 2019.Feltner has good stuff. The metrics say so, as do the Rockies, even though Feltner entered Thursday’s game 0-2 with an unsightly 8.78 ERA and a track record of going off the rails the second or third time through a lineup. But the right-hander stayed solidly on track, pitching 5 2/3 scoreless innings and limiting the Phillies to three hits while fanning six and walking three.Phillies left-hander Matt Strahm baffled most of the Rockies, hence his 11 strikeouts in 5 1/3 innings, but he couldn’t fool Cron with a 3-1 slider in the first inning. Cron crushed the pitch for a two-run, line-drive homer to left...Northern Colorado wide receiver takes speed, dexterity to baseball diamond

A proposal to construct a luxury gated housing development in the Verdugo Mountains has residents concerned over the potential devastation of wildlife and native plants while leaving tenants in a fire zone.Residents in the Verdugo Mountains love enjoying the undisturbed wilderness that surrounds their community. But locals say a newly proposed luxury development will threaten everything. The proposed project, called The Canyon Hills Development, was approved by the Los Angeles City Council in 2005.It was given a 20-year timeframe during which it was allowed to build about 220 new homes. But over the last 18 years, nothing has happened until the developer, Whitebird, Inc., requested permits to begin preparing the site in January 2023.That’s when the group “No Canyon Hills” reorganized to protest the proposed plans.Residents concerned that a proposed luxury housing development in the Verdugo mountains will wipe out natural landscapes and displace wildlife. SAN FRANCISCO — Sacramento Kings coach Mike Brown knows first-hand what kind of home-court advantage the Warriors were set to have on Thursday night.Heading into Game 3 of the first round of the Western Conference playoffs with a 2-0 lead over the defending champions, Brown was expecting a rowdy crowd at the Chase Center.“Oh man, it’s gonna be tough,” Brown said before Game 3. “It’s gonna be a dog fight. The fans here are fantastic; the team’s going to feed off the energy of the fans, they’re going to rally behind Draymond (Green), which they should. It’s going to be a great atmosphere out there. It’s going to be tough as nails to try to get a win.”Green, suspended for Game 3 after stepping on the chest of Domantas Sabonis in Game 2, was planning to watch Game 3 from home, said Warriors coach Steve Kerr.“I think our crowd will help cover that,” Kerr said. “So it’ll be fine.”Brown spent six seasons as Kerr’s assistant before he to...Latest news
