By HILLEL ITALIE (AP National Writer)NEW YORK (AP) — Salman Rushdie has a memoir coming out about the horrifying attack that left him blind in his right eye and with a damaged left hand. “Knife: Meditations After an Attempted Murder” will be published April 16.“This was a necessary book for me to write: a way to take charge of what happened, and to answer violence with art,” Rushdie said in a statement released Wednesday by Penguin Random House. Bay Area News Group high school football predictions: Week 8, 2023

Published Sat, 22 Feb 2025 10:48:35 GMT

For those of us who cover games through the state championships, we have reached the halfway point.Eight weeks to go after this one before we put a bow on the 2023 season. In our all-in-fun Bay Area News Group picks competition, I am having a great time. I went 13-3 last week to stretch my lead over Mike Lefkow to seven games and Joseph Dycus to 17 games.Give Dycus (aka The Kid) credit. He has taken some chances. If all goes his way this weekend, he can cut six games off my advantage. Lefkow has a shot to trim five games off the deficit. The big game this week is the one Lefkow has talked about for weeks: De La Salle at San Ramon Valley. Will history be made Friday night in Danville? Will De La Salle lose to a North Coast Section team for the first time since Pittsburg beat the Spartans in 1991?We discuss that game in great detail in our video roundtable, with Lefkow noting that John Ben Pau Mendoza’s absence at running back for SRV is a huge deal. The senior suffered a season-endi...

Local fans sack 49ers broadcasts for featuring shots of San Francisco instead of Silicon Valley

Published Sat, 22 Feb 2025 10:48:35 GMT

Sweeping views of the Golden Gate bridge, Alcatraz Island and San Francisco’s skyline have dominated aerial shots for 49ers television broadcasts for years — after all, it’s the team’s namesake. But it’s been nearly a decade since the NFL team played in the City by the Bay after its 2014 relocation roughly 40 miles south from Candlestick Park to Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara, and national broadcasts still pan San Francisco’s cityscape before and after commercial breaks. Many South Bay Niners fans have had enough, taking to social media in recent weeks to bemoan the lack of Santa Clara aerial footage, particularly following comments made by sportscaster Al Michaels during a Sept. 21 Thursday Night Football game between the 49ers and the New York Giants on Prime Video.“Have you ever noticed we come here and all of our aerials are from 44 miles away?” Michaels said. The longtime play-by-play announcer called San Francisco “beauti...

How motorcyclists can more safely split lanes: Roadshow

Published Sat, 22 Feb 2025 10:48:35 GMT

Q: My question regards lane sharing. Frequently motorcyclists are traveling much faster than vehicular traffic, and are not always easy to spot when changing lanes. Which vehicle (car or motorcycle) has the right of way in the “shared” lane, if there is an accident between them when changing lanes?Jan Jurnecka, AptosA: Lane splitting is legal in California, but it can be very dangerous. Motorcyclists have the right to drive between cars here, but that doesn’t mean they can do so in an unsafe way which could lead to accidents.I checked the California Driver’s Handbook and the California Motorcycle Handbook to see what they say about lane splitting. The motorcycle handbook was more valuable in this case. The motorcycle handbook places great emphasis in all sections on motorcyclists’ responsibility to keep themselves safe. This handbook says of lane splitting, “Riding between rows of stopped or moving vehicles in the same lane can leave you vulnerable...

Can the San Jose Sharks (gasp!) improve? Five ways they can be better than expected

Published Sat, 22 Feb 2025 10:48:35 GMT

SAN JOSE – The San Jose Sharks were in the early stages of practice — exercising an up-tempo drill — when a sloppy entry by one forward across the blue line resulted in an easy turnover for the opposing defenseman.Right then, Sharks coach David Quinn halted the drill. Using some choice language, Quinn raised his voice and reminded his team that poor puck management was one of the Sharks’ biggest issues last season.“It’s not going to happen this year,” Quinn told his team Tuesday. “We have to work with a purpose.”Fixing those types of mistakes will be crucial for the Sharks if they have any hope of improving upon their 22-44-16 record from last season. This is not a team that figures to light up the scoreboard now that Erik Karlsson and Timo Meier are no longer wearing teal, so playing smart, detailed hockey will be necessary if they want to remain competitive on a nightly basis.“Will we win games 6-5? Probably not,” Sharks winger Mike Hoffman said. “But...
