(CNN) — Acclaimed director Sofia Coppola is giving viewers another peek at her upcoming biopic “Priscilla,” which takes the focus off the King of Rock ‘n’ Roll and shines a light on his iconic wife Priscilla Presley.A new trailer released on Tuesday shows the beginnings of the union between Priscilla Beaulieu (Cailee Spaeny) and Elvis Presley (Jacob Elordi), a pairing that was mired in controversy due to the pair’s age gap (something Priscilla has addressed herself).Elvis is already at the height of his fame in the clip, and what follows are snippets showing him courting Priscilla, with the young girl adrift among a crowd of screaming fans as Elvis greets her in uniform. In a voice over, Priscilla’s father asks, “Why my daughter?” when the legendary crooner could have his pick of anyone.“Well, sir, I happen to be very fond of your daughter,” Elordi’s Elvis replies. As the pair grow closer, Priscilla’s unassuming style changes to something more attention-getting, with bigger and bigger...

Don’t expect EU sanctions on Azerbaijan — even though MEPs will vote for them

Published Sat, 22 Feb 2025 07:14:13 GMT

STRASBOURG — The European Parliament is expected to call for sanctions against Azerbaijan on Thursday over the seizure of the ethnic Armenian enclave of Nagorno-Karabakh last month, but Baku’s long lobbying reach in Europe and its crucial gas reserves mean EU countries will probably ignore the MEPs’ demand. Azerbaijan launched a lightning strike into the breakaway territory in September, forcing 100,000 people to flee. The crisis has exposed a deep division over Europe’s attitude to the two parties. While European politicians are often willing to take Armenia’s side in symbolic appeals and expressions of concern, Azerbaijan has established more hard power, not least because the EU is increasingly turning to Caspian Sea gas as an alternative to Russia after the Kremlin’s invasion of Ukraine. The situation “looks like it did with Ukraine,” said Nathalie Loiseau, a French lawmaker from the centrist Renew group and chair of the Parliament’s def...

(KDVR) — On Wednesday, Oct. 4, at approximately 11:20 a.m. PT, two odd-sounding national alerts will go off on all TVs, radios and phones.Just remember: this is only a test. The messages are part of a nationwide test conducted by the Federal Emergency Management Agency and the Federal Communications Commission. The point of these alerts is to test out the Emergency Alert System and Wireless Emergency System. The message will read:“This is a nationwide test of the Emergency Alert System, issued by the Federal Emergency Management Agency, covering the United States from 14:20 to 14:50 hours ET. This is only a test. No action is required by the public."In an actual emergency, this system provides the president with the capability to address Americans within 10 minutes.Meanwhile, t...

Poland’s central bank cuts interest rates for the second time in month

WARSAW, Poland (AP) — Poland’s central bank lowered its key interest rate Wednesday, pointing to a drop in inflation despite a still-high rate of 8.2% last month, raising concerns about the cut being a political move. The National Bank of Poland cut its benchmark rate a quarter of a percentage point to 5.75%. Analysts were expecting it after annual inflation dropped last month from 10.1% in August. Inflation was over 18% earlier this year.It was the second rate cut since Sept. 9, when the central bank surprisingly slashed rates by three-quarters of a point. Other central banks worldwide are increasing borrowing costs or holding rates at high levels to tackle inflation stemming from the global economy’s rebound from the COVID-19 pandemic and Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, which spiked food and energy costs. The European Central Bank hiked its key rate by a quarter-point last month to fight inflation, which has since dropped to a two-year low of 4.3% in the 20 countries using...
